Hello and welcome to my guide to web design! I am going to be focusing on coding pages by hand in html, various layout techniques, graphics tips and downloads. I am by no means an expert on the subject & I am constantly learning myself. After making my dolls site, I have had many emails from visitors to my site asking for advice on making their first website - so here it is! I am going to take it very slowly & it really will be aimed at the beginner, so I hope you find it useful. If at any point you have any questions, please feel free to mail me.
If you want to take a look at some other sites that I have made, I have included links to them on the left hand side of this page. There are various ways of creating a website for yourself. The first and probably easiest way is to use an online template provided by someone like Yahoo. This is a good way to make a site if you just want something quick and easy. The problem with this form of webdesign is that you have very limited control over the various aspects of the site & this can lead to it looking very standard & un-original. The second option you have is to use a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor such as Frontpage, Netscape Composer, Hotdog, Hot Metal or Dreamweaver, to name but a few. There are a lot of them out them, some of them are free such as Frontpage Express and Netscape Composer & some cost a lot of money like Dreamweaver. Once you get the hang of how to use the program of your choice, these are very easy to use as well - it's almost like creating a document in Word or Publisher. Personally, I cannot abide Frontpage, I've had to use it for work & find it unintuitive and annoying to use. I have Dreamweaver and find it a far more pleasant experience to use! However, I very rarely actually use a WYSIWIG editor, I still find them too rigid. I prefer to take the third option... That is, to code your pages by hand using raw HTML code. I want to let you in on a little secret - it's not difficult! Once you've got the hang of the basic principals, I'm sure you'll agree with me. On this site, I am going to be teaching you the basics of coding by hand & I guarantee if you take your time and go through it carefully, you'll be able to make pages like this in no time! Right, that's my introduction! Now, click here and we'll begin...
